Read proxy checks and risk labels
This guide explains what you see beside each proxy: whether it’s working, how risky its IP is, and whether it’s still given to profiles. It also covers the settings for how sticky proxies are checked.
Everything here is on the Proxies tab of the Proxies screen.
The Location / Exit IP column
Section titled “The Location / Exit IP column”This column shows where a proxy exits, its IP and its speed. Its icon and colour tell you two different things. Click the i in the column heading for this key.
The icon is the last test:
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Tick | Connected |
| Cross | Failed or turned off |
| Dashed circle | Not tested yet |
Click the icon to test the proxy again.
The colour is the IP’s risk, from Risk 1 to Risk 5, or Not scored. Hover over a location to see its level.
Risk labels
Section titled “Risk labels”ExitNode gives each proxy’s exit IP a risk score.
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Risk 1 | Least risky |
| Risk 2 | Some risk |
| Risk 3 | Risky |
| Risk 4 | Very risky |
| Risk 5 | Most risky |
| Not scored | No score yet |
To show only some levels, use Filters, then Risk.
Turn risk scores on or off
Section titled “Turn risk scores on or off”IP Risk Check in the sidebar turns scores on or off for your organization. Only admins can change it. While it’s off, no scores are taken.
Your monthly allowance
Section titled “Your monthly allowance”Checks in the sidebar shows the checks used this month against your plan’s allowance. While a run is going, it also shows how many are pending.
Repeat checks of the same IP within 24 hours are free. Past your allowance, checks can continue from credits if Pay as you go is on. See Credits and limits.
The Status column
Section titled “The Status column”Status says whether the proxy is working right now. Hover over it for the full explanation.
Working
Section titled “Working”| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Connected | It passed its last check. The second line shows the time left, for a sticky proxy. |
| Checking… | It’s being tested now. |
| Not checked | It hasn’t been tested yet. Click the icon in Location / Exit IP. |
| Re-checking | The last check saw a different exit than the tested one. It’s checked again soon. If the exit differs again, the proxy is retired and its profiles move to another. |
| Held | See below. |
| Inconclusive | The last check couldn’t be judged. Nothing is known to be wrong, and it’s checked again. |
| Gateway unreachable | No computer could reach this proxy’s tested route on the last check. Nothing is known to be wrong, and it’s checked again. |
A second line reading Not checked for a length of time means nobody’s computer has checked it recently. Checks run from your team’s computers, so none may be online.
Not working
Section titled “Not working”| Status | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Unreachable | The last check couldn’t connect. | Test it again from the icon. |
| Turned off | Someone disabled it, so it isn’t given to profiles. | Click Enable in its menu. |
| Plan required | Proxy checks need an active plan. | See Billing and plans. |
| Expired | Its sticky session ended. | The next check retires it. |
| Retired statuses | See below. |
Held proxies
Section titled “Held proxies”Held means the proxy’s IP risk rose, but stayed below Risk 3. The profile on it keeps it until it expires. It isn’t given to any other profile.
Held is something ExitNode sets. There’s no button to hold a proxy. To stop using one yourself, use Disable.
Retired proxies
Section titled “Retired proxies”A retired proxy is no longer given to profiles. The status names the reason:
| Status | Why it was retired |
|---|---|
| Expired | Its session time ran out. |
| IP changed | Its exit IP changed. |
| Location changed | Its location changed. |
| Not answering | It stopped answering. |
| Flagged | Its IP risk reached Risk 3 or higher, or it turned up as a VPN or a different connection type. |
The second line says when it will be removed, such as removed in 3h, or kept · in use while a profile still uses it.
A profile on a retired proxy moves to an unused proxy from the same group at its next launch. If there’s none, see If a group runs out, below.
Hide retired proxies
Section titled “Hide retired proxies”Under Filters, set Retired to Hide. Show at the end is the default. This choice is remembered on this computer.
Bring a retired proxy back
Section titled “Bring a retired proxy back”Right-click it and click Re-test from this computer. This needs permission to manage proxies. If the check passes, the message reads Connected, tested IP; retirement cleared.
This tests through your computer’s own route, and sets what it sees as the tested result for everyone in your organization. The app explains this before you confirm.
Test a proxy
Section titled “Test a proxy”| To test | Do this |
|---|---|
| One proxy | Click the icon in Location / Exit IP, or right-click and click Test Connection. |
| Several | Tick them, and click Test in the bottom bar. |
| A profile’s proxy | Click the icon in its Location / Exit IP cell on the Profiles tab. |
These test the connection, not a site. To test against a site, see Test proxies for a site.
What the message means
Section titled “What the message means”| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| Connected and an IP | It works. |
| Exit IP updated | It works, and its exit IP is new. |
| Exit differs; re-checking in 10 min | The exit isn’t the tested one. It’s checked again soon. |
| No answer; re-checking in 10 min | It didn’t answer. It’s checked again soon. |
| Inconclusive; will re-check | The result couldn’t be judged. |
| Retired and a reason | It failed and is now retired. |
| Still retired | It stays retired. |
| Proxy checks need an active plan | Your plan doesn’t include checks. |
Check history
Section titled “Check history”Right-click a proxy and click Check history. This needs permission to manage proxies.
A sheet lists its last 30 days of checks, newest first: when, which kind, from which computer, and the result. Results read like Matched the tested IP, Exit differs, No answer, Retired or Not judged.
Sticky proxy health settings
Section titled “Sticky proxy health settings”Sticky proxies last a set time, and some stop early. ExitNode checks them in the background, and moves a profile off one that has stopped working.
Go to Proxies, then the Settings tab. The sentence at the top sums up your current settings. Each choice applies when you click it. You need permission to manage proxies. Without it, you can read them but not change them.
| Setting | Choices | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Check proxies in use | Automatic, Every 30 min, Every hour, Every 3 hours, Never | How often proxies that a profile uses are checked. |
| Check unused proxies | Automatic, Every 3 hours, Every 6 hours, Every 12 hours, Never | How often waiting proxies are checked, so a dead one is never handed out. |
| IP risk score | On, Off | Scores a proxy’s IP before it’s given to a profile. Uses your monthly checks. Has no effect while IP Risk Check is off. |
| If a group runs out | Don’t launch, Launch with a warning | What happens when a profile has no replacement. |
| Keep retired proxies | 1 day, 3 days, 7 days | How long a retired proxy stays in the list. One still in use is kept until its profile moves. |
Automatic fits the schedule to each proxy’s session length.
If a group runs out
Section titled “If a group runs out”| Choice | What happens | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Don’t launch | The profile waits, marked Needs a proxy, until you add proxies to its group or pool. | You want nothing to run on an IP that has changed. |
| Launch with a warning | The profile launches on its old proxy and you see a warning. | Speed matters more. It may run on an IP that has changed. |
See Keep a profile on your proxies.
This computer
Section titled “This computer”Check proxies from this computer chooses whether this computer helps with the background checks. It only affects this computer. Turn it off to keep this computer out of it. Your team’s other computers carry on. If no computer is checking, a proxy is retired only when its session ends.
Test Proxies
Section titled “Test Proxies”Session proxy names sets how test runs name the session proxies they make: Session ID, Number, or Date + number. The example under the choices shows the result. Names you type are never replaced.
If something goes wrong
Section titled “If something goes wrong”“Only people who can manage proxies can change these” Ask an owner or admin.
“Only people who can manage proxies can see the check history.” The same.
“Couldn’t load proxy settings” Check your connection and open the tab again.
“That setting isn’t available yet. Try again after the next update.” Your organization’s setup doesn’t have this setting yet.
“This proxy has no address to test” The proxy has no line saved.
