Get started with ExitNode

By the end of this guide you’ll have an ExitNode account, the desktop app on your computer, and one browser profile open in the Exora browser.

ExitNode is in closed beta, so some screens may change.

  • An email address you can open. You confirm it before you can download the app.
  • A Mac with Apple silicon, or a Windows 10 or 11 PC if the download page offers the Windows build.
  1. Go to exitnode.app/auth/sign-up.
  2. Enter your Email.
  3. Enter a Password of at least 8 characters, then type it again in Confirm password.
  4. Tick the box to accept the Terms of Service.
  5. Click Create account.
  6. On the Check your email page, open the email from ExitNode and click its link.

If the email doesn’t arrive, check your spam folder. The try again link on that page takes you back to the form.

Your account starts with its own organization. It holds your profiles, proxies and settings. Its name appears at the top right of the desktop app.

  1. Go to exitnode.app/download. In the web app, this is Download app in the sidebar. Sign in if you’re asked to.
  2. Click Download for macOS or Download for Windows. If Windows isn’t available yet, the page says Windows: coming soon.
  3. Install the app:
    • On a Mac, open the downloaded zip and move ExitNode to Applications.
    • On Windows, open the downloaded zip and run ExitNode-Setup.

Your download link is made for your account and works for 15 minutes. If it expires, go back to the page and click the button again.

Open ExitNode. It shows Starting… and Checking for updates…, then the sign-in screen.

You have two ways to sign in.

Sign in on web is the default. Use it unless you have a reason not to.

  1. Click Sign in on web. Your browser opens exitnode.app.
  2. The app shows Waiting for your browser.
  3. In your browser, sign in. On the Sign in to the ExitNode app page, check the computer name, then click Allow and open the app.
  4. Go back to ExitNode. It continues on its own.

While the app waits, Open the page again reopens the browser page, and Cancel stops the sign-in.

Email and password works without your browser.

  1. Click Use email and password instead.
  2. Enter your Email and Password.
  3. Click Sign in.

If you see Before you continue, ExitNode needs you to accept its terms:

  1. Read the documents listed on the screen.
  2. Tick the box.
  3. Click Accept and continue.

Sign out on that screen takes you back to the sign-in screen instead.

The app may then show Checking for updates… again while it downloads the browser. A progress bar shows how far it has got. When it finishes, the main window opens.

  1. In the sidebar, click Browser Profiles. The sidebar starts collapsed, so you may see icons only. Hover over an icon to see its name, or click Expand sidebar at the bottom.
  2. Make sure the Profiles tab is selected.
  3. Click Quick Profile.
  4. In the New profile dialog, type a Profile name.
  5. Click Create.

The new profile appears in the table. Its Location / Exit IP column shows Direct and No proxy. That means it connects through your own internet connection. To give it a proxy before you launch it, see Keep a profile on your proxies.

  1. In the profile’s row, click Start.
  2. The button changes to Starting…. An Exora browser window opens.
  3. When the profile is running, the button shows Stop.
  4. Use the browser as you normally would.
  5. When you’re done, click Stop or close the browser window. The button shows Uploading… while ExitNode saves the profile, then goes back to Start.

The next time you click Start, the profile opens with its saved session.

“Confirm your email address first, then come back here to download.” Click the link in your confirmation email, then return to the download page.

“You’ve asked for a lot of download links in the last hour. Please try again later.” Wait a while, then try again.

“No download is published right now. Please try again soon.” No build is available at the moment. Try again later.

“Enter your email and password.” One of the fields is empty.

“Sign-in timed out. Start again when you’re ready.” You took too long in the browser. Click Sign in on web again.

“Sign-in was cancelled in your browser.” You chose Cancel on the browser page. Start again and choose Allow and open the app.

“Couldn’t open your browser. Choose Open the page again.” Click Open the page again. If that doesn’t work, use your email and password.

“Web sign-in isn’t available on this computer. Use your email and password instead.” Click Use email and password instead.

Update required on the start screen Check your connection and click Retry. If it still stops, Download the latest version opens the download page.

“Profile limit reached (3)” Your plan’s profile limit is full. The number in the message is your limit. The Free plan allows 3 profiles. Delete a profile, or see Billing and plans.

“Device limit reached (3 per login)” Each login can run ExitNode on up to 3 devices. Open Devices in the web app and click Revoke on one you no longer use. See Settings.

“The Exora browser is not installed yet” The browser hasn’t finished downloading. Let the app finish, or open Settings in the sidebar and click Install browser on the Browser card.

“Profile is already in use” Someone else, or another of your devices, has this profile open. Wait for it to close.
